Swan Lake/Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary
About it: Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary is a nature education centre. It is a registered charitable organization run by the Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary Society. The lands and facilities are owned by the Corporation of the District of Saanich, and the Nature Sanctuary Society operates through a land management agreement with Saanich since June, 1975. The Mission of the Society is to manage the Swan Lake Christmas Hill Sanctuary as a focus for fostering an understanding and appreciation of nature through direct experiences that will develop personal responsibility for the care and protection of the natural environment. Programs: On site School programs: • Nature Sanctuary (Kindergarten & Grade 1)- Awaken and enjoy using your senses, both in the Nature House and outdoors, in this gentle introduction to the Nature Sanctuary. Compare your senses with those of a living turtle or snake. • Way Cool Raccoon School (grades 1-2)- A puppet show, specimens and active outdoor stations will involve your class in our raccoon school. Students will learn why these mammals are so successful in an urban environment. • Introduction to Paleontology (grades 1-2)- Students will watch a palaeontologist excavate, hunt for plant and animal fossils, and compare living ducks and turtles to a dinosaur. This precedes the Victoria Palaeontology Society's annual Fossil Fair. 1 • Seed Scavenger Hunt introduces students to the variety of seeds found outdoors. • Acorns to Oaks (grades 2-3)- shows students the development and life of our local Garry Oak trees through hands-on activities and drama. • Dirt is Different (grades 2-3)- presents topsoil, clay, peat and lake muck by hands-on sampling from three different areas near the Nature House. 2 • Social Insects(grades 2-3)- A drama introduction to honeybees, a close look at the demonstration bee hive, and an outdoors game and walk through of the habitats of ants, wasps and bees. • Wetlands Discovery (grade 4)- Students (1) collect and record observations of aquatic plants and animals, (2) are introduced to adaptations of some of the vertebrates of the wetlands and their role in the food chain of this habitat, and (3) gain an understanding of the value of wetlands. • Wintering Waterbirds and Cool Trees (grade 5)- Two of B.C.'s natural resources are featured as students become field naturalists, using binoculars to watch our wintering birds. Back at the "Field House" recall field notes and do mapping. As Foresters, investigate the adaptations of deciduous and evergreen trees in winter mode. • Microscope Discoveries (grade 6)- Students will collect living material, prepare these specimens for examination, and learn to properly use both dissecting and compound microscopes and record their observations. Students will also have the opportunity to examine some of their own cells. • Watershed (grades 7-8)- A local history of Swan Lake will show how people have influenced it. Lake dipping and a plankton tow will give material for examining with two different kinds of microscopes. Teaches will be provided with information on food chains. 2 In school Programs • Travelling Snake Program (grades 2-7)- The popular travelling program comes to your classroom with charts and hands-on material including snake skins, bones and live snakes. • Travelling Owl Program (grades 2-6)- A slide show and stations featuring specimens, props, dissected owl pellets and owl music will teach your class about local owls. Teachers can even have their class dissect their own owl pellets. • Travelling Bat Program (grades 2-4)- A bat puppet show will introduce students to the biology and habitats of bats. At four stations students will complete their "Comparing Bats and Me" booklet. • Travelling Spider Program (all grades)- Rosebud, the Nature Sanctuary's Chilean Rose tarantula, would like to visit your classroom. Students will be amazed looking closely at her through lenses as she crawls on Margaret's hand. Self Guided Programs Public Programs How to use this resource: Swan Lake/Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary has created a number of programs varying at age levels to address different environmental issues and nature education. Teachers would find this organization very helpful when planning units to increase student’s knowledge of local animals and environmental issues.
